DIY Beeswax Jar Candles
INGREDIENTS
450g beeswax
½ cup coconut oil (optional)
1 tsp essential oil (optional)
Wicks
Glass jars
INSTRUCTIONS
Place the beeswax and coconut oil (if using) in a metal bowl or heat-safe jug.
Set the bowl over a pot with a few inches of water to create a double boiler. Ensure the water level is low enough to avoid spilling into the wax.
Gently bring the water to a boil, stirring occasionally until the wax and oil are fully melted. Add essential oil now if using.
Pour about 1cm of melted wax into the bottom of each jar. Return the bowl to the hot water to keep the rest of the wax melted.
Insert a wick into the centre of each jar. Use a skewer to press the wick into place and hold it for a few minutes until it stands on its own.
Let the wax cool for 5–10 minutes until it’s firm enough to hold the wick upright.
Secure the wick in place by using a peg across the jar’s top or wrap the wick around a bamboo skewer laid across the opening.
Carefully pour the remaining melted wax into the jars, leaving about 2cm of space at the top.
Check that the wick is still centred and adjust gently if needed.
Place the candles in a warm spot to set overnight. A warm environment helps prevent cracking.
Once the candles are fully set, trim the wick to about 1cm. Don’t cut it shorter, or the flame may be too small and cause tunnelling.
If the candle flickers or smokes when lit, blow it out, trim the wick slightly more, and re-light.
