INGREDIENTS

  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 cup + 2 tbsp warm water
  • 3 1/2 cups bread flour (plus extra for dusting)
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt

INSTRUCTIONS

Instructions:

  1. Combine yeast, sugar, and 1/2 cup water. Let sit for 5 minutes. Mix with flour, salt, and slowly add the remaining water until a the dough holds together.
  2. Knead by hand for 10 minutes until smooth adding small amounts of flour as needed, until the dough feels firm and smooth. Alternatively if you have a mixer use a dough hook on medium speed for 5-6 minutes, until the dough is elastic but not sticky.
  3. Shape the dough into a ball, place it in a lightly greased bowl, and cover with a clean towel or plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 even pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, then use your thumb to press a hole in the center. Gently stretch the hole to about half the diameter of the bagel. Arrange the bagels on a lined or greased baking sheet, cover with a damp cloth, and let them rest for 15 minutes.
  5. Preheat your oven to 220°C. Bring a large pot of water to a gentle boil. Carefully place a few bagels into the water and let them cook for 1-2 minutes on each side. The longer they boil, the chewier they will be. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the bagels back to the baking sheet.
  6. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before serving.

💡 Pro Tip: Add sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or coarse salt before baking for an extra touch of flavor!
